Things to do and see when not caving
[Full View]
Walking The Caving Club area is surrounded by good walking country, with the Black Mountain to our immediate NW and the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains to the NE. These can give you fairly rugged walks, which in winter require a little careful preparation, for safety's sake. More gentle walks can be taken up the valleys of the Afon Hepste and Afon Mellte to see the waterfalls. Henryd waterfall is worth a visit too, and can look very pretty in winter. Dragon Caving Gear Dragon is sadly now closed! The Copper Beech ( phone 01639 730269 ) The local pub just off the main road in Abercraf village. This family run business supplies a range of real ales, lagers and ciders. There is a good selection of home cooked food served in a friendly atmosphere. Children are welcome in the early evening, and there is a garden that they can use. Accommodation is available. All rooms are en-suite and have television and tea making facilities.
Heritage Trail
About 100 Yards south of the Coach House is the entrance to the 'Craig-y-Nos Quarry and Heritage Trail'. This is a short walk showing examples of the local minerals and their importance locally. A good educational trip for school children, there are written materials available from the Craig-y-Nos Country Park. Pony Trekking is available from the Pentre Trekking Centre whose stables are next door to the Coach House The Dan-yr-Ogof Showcave complex is slightly further north up the valley from the Coach House. It provides many attractions apart from the showcaves. These include bar and coffee shop, a dinosaur park, museum, dry ski slope and souvenir shop. The grounds are extensive, containing an iron-age farm to explore and a Shire horse centre. During the summer months there are often craft shows, horse ploughing exhibitions etc. See their web site Craig y Nos Castle and Country Park The original grounds to Craig-y-Nos Castle, formerly the home of Adelina Patti, a very famous and rich opera singer from the beginning of the 20th century. The Country Park is a beautiful place for a short Sunday stroll with the kids. Tourist information, maps and books are available from the office in the park.
