The 2003 Working Week took place over the bank holiday weekend at the end of May and continued
through the following week. A total of 40 Club members contributed their services, some working for one or two days and
others for the whole period. At one stage, the whole thing began to look like a performance of The Scottish Play as
there were no less than three witches in attendance and Birnam Wood was seen to move; albeit not to Dunsinane, but to
Kershaw Terrace. Luckily there were no murders, merely the usual crop of injuries and the now mandatory excursion to
Morriston Hospital. The sleepwalking scene was also re-enacted in the early hours of each morning, although it is
thought that the cause was less likely to have been guilt-ridden nightmares than the huge amounts of beer consumed.
This year, there were still a number of constructional jobs but with an increased proportion of more cosmetic ones
designed to make the cottages look a little better. The work schedule was an ambitious one, but the majority of the
tasks tackled were successfully completed. The weather was on the whole kind to us, the number of jobs which went wrong
half way through was comparatively few and everybody put in a lot of effort to bring it all together by the end of the
week.
The Club's thanks go to all those who gave up their time to help, to the Dragons who fed/watered the troops and
trained up the Dragonettes to full Dragon status, and to Brian's doctor who prescribed sufficient Prozac to keep him
quiet as his beloved cottages were torn to pieces and some of his most prized rubbish was consigned to the tip.
Thanks are also due to WBCRT who kindly offered the use of the rescue building as a workbase during wet weather. The
Working Week made a donation of £25 to rescue funds in recognition of this help.
If you were not there, you once again missed a fun week and the opportunity to get to know other Club members. The
list of jobs is endless and we look forward to seeing everybody again, hopefully with some new faces as well, for
Working Week 2004. Such is the popularity of this event that before long, we may even have to sell tickets. Meanwhile,
if you have any ideas on what needs doing to the cottages, or have spotted something that is wrong or doesn't work
properly, please let us know.
