Out-takes from the week

The 2007 Working Week took place as usual at the end of May and into the start of June. Despite an initially poor list of people attending, a few more appeared at intervals and by the end a considerable amount of work was done.  Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, we also missed a few familiar faces and look forward to seeing them return next year.

The usual trip to Morriston Hospital nearly came about on two separate occasions, one being a totally unexpected event and the other avoided by having put into place some safety procedures. Beer consumption in the evenings was maintained at its usual levels and supplies lasted just nicely to the end of the week with no top ups required.  The Working Week would not be the same without a rescue callout.  This year, the first Saturday saw 3 simultaneously overdue parties but thankfully it was not necessary to initiate the full procedure.  A more seriously overdue party on the second weekend did require a formal callout but the missing people reappeared just as search parties were set to enter the cave.

This year, the major jobs included the completion of Gents Showers, conversion of the Old Locker Room into the No.3 Bunk Room, replacement of the floor and ceiling in the Old Tackle Room and repairs to the No.10 chimney. There were many other smaller jobs and repairs carried out and with a few more people around, the backlog of painting from 2006 was cleared. The weather was variable but thankfully there were comparatively few prolonged wet spells to cause problems (the roof team might have a different opinion on this).

The Club's thanks go to all those who take seriously the concept of the 'voluntary ethos'. Our special thanks go to one or two people who gave help despite the fact that they are not even Club members. Working Week members give up valuable time and in many cases lose income by virtue of being there, saving SWCC thousands of pounds.

Thanks are again due to WBCRT who allowed us to use of the rescue building as a workbase and of course to the Dragons who kept the workers fed and watered despite being under strength at times.

Despite excellent progress with repairs and development, the tasks looming for 2008 look as if they will include some big projects, Ladies Showers being just one of them. The Working Week team will be keeping you updated on plans via the Club web site and news sheets.
