We are sad to report that John Hartwell, an early member of the club, has died of cancer in Brighton, Australia, on 5th December 2011.
John teamed up with Clive Jones in 1950 and soon both had joined SWCC. They were heady days, membership was small, and caves and opportunities to find new caves, were plentiful.
He was a major player in the Balinka expedition and, with Les Hawes, identified the place to dig and started digging into Cwm Dwr Quarry Cave and OFD 2. In later years, John took up mountaineering visiting the New Zealand Alps, Himalaya and Karakorum.
He loved deep caves and high mountains, but most of all he loved his family – his wife Margaret (who passed away in October), his daughter Jennie, and his granddaughter Charlotte.
