Searching for old SWCC documents - from Sue Goodhead

For those of you who don't know I am the current Document Archivist for the Club and I have two pleas / requests:-

Currently I am attempting to create files which contain all the AGM minutes from the beginning of the club's existence. So far I have worked from 1970 to date and I am missing the reports from 1971, 1973 (I have officer reports only) and 1974. The earliest EGM minutes are from 1977. Does anyone have copies of the missing minutes please or any that pre-date 1970? It is possible that they may be part of a newsletter pre-1970. I am willing to scan them and return the originals to their owners if this is requested.

Second plea is for any documents that you may have hiding in your attic, study, unopened box after moving house etc. It doesn't matter what they are for now - I would like to be aware of them. I don't want them sent or brought to the Club at the moment since I don't know what is out there amongst the membership and I don't want to be inundated with papers. If you are willing to let me know by e mail what you think may have, or know you do have, it would be really helpful in my planning to rationalise the document archives. Any document that you have will be scanned and returned if you so wish, or you may wish to donate the original to the Club.

Finally a big thank you to all those who sent me a solution / offer of help to digitise the reel of Balinka Pit film. This is currently in hand (hopefully) and will be part of my next "organisation of archive" project.

Thank you all in anticipation of your help! sue.goodhead1@gmail.com

Collapse in Daren Cilau - from "Madphil" via Piers Hallihan

" On last weekend’s trip to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the Fat Belly Boys discovered that a large section of the roof had collapsed in Acupuncture. The collapse was over 5ft in length with over 1m in thickness of the roof collapsing. It was not possible to pass the collapse. Thankfully, no one was under the collapse or trapped beyond.

After a long session on Saturday, the collapse was partially removed, but the roof is still in a highly unstable state. The passage has now been left to settle and remedial work will be undertaken in due course to stabilise this area. Due to the tight nature and size of blocks that fell it would have not been possible to have cleared this collapse from the far side.

Furthermore, the group has been aware that an area towards the exit of Acupuncture (near the Micron) was very dubious in nature, with blocks having fallen on members and blocks often being discovered in the floor on the way into camps. It was initially thought that it was this area that had collapsed. On partial removal, however, it was apparent that it was an area of the crawl previously thought stable, much earlier in the passage. No one (including me) was prepared to squeeze past the collapse and see if the exit of acupuncture was clear or had also collapsed.

Acupuncture is currently moving, and is still highly unstable. It is requested that people to do not go past Western Union and DO NOT enter Acupuncture until the group report that the passage has been stabilised. A rescue from such a collapse and being so far in to the cave would not be pretty!!.

It has left members somewhat spooked that a previously assumed stable passage, one in which we have travel through many times and one that has seen a significant amount of traffic over the years has been the site of a significant collapsed!! Please Take Heed”

Treviso, August - cavers needed - from Phil Walker

This year’s expedition to Tresviso, Picos de Europa, Spain is happening over the period of 3rd August to 17th August and I’m in need of a few more able bodied cavers to help out.

Main focus will be the continuing push of a series of pitches found last year at the back end of Cueva del Agua, slowly heading through the mountain.

Current limit is at the top of an undescended 20m pitch. The lead is about 5km into the cave and requires SRT skills and a willingness to camp underground for 3 to 4 days at a time. Agua itself still has a lot of leads both near the entrance and deeper into the cave, so there are other options than trips to the back end.

Higher up the mountain, there is another cave that it would be great to get a team to explore further. Torca Septrin, pushed to -140m in 2009 with a potential of at least -800m. Current exploration is at a draughting constriction, that requires a bit of persuasion.

The majority of the caves will require SRT proficiency , although there is plenty of normal caving for those less inclined to SRT.

There is a slight overlap with Gary’s Cantabria trip, so anyone wishing to stay out an extra week and drive over to the Picos is more than welcome.

Huglith Mine, September - from Piers Hallihan

Following from the success of last year's Snailbeach Mine trip, I’ve now confirmed a visit to Huglith Mine a few miles away from Snailbeach with some guides from SCMC again. The trip will take place on 21st / 22nd September.

Details of other trips for the Sunday and accommodation will be sorted over the summer but an early indication of numbers along with a preference for accommodation type (YHA, Camping, etc.) would be appreciated. piershallihan@yahoo.co.uk

Help still needed for Working Week - from Chris Grimmett

We could still do with more bodies to help with Working Week otherwise all the jobs that need doing are not going to get done. If you could get down to the Club over the Bank Holiday weekend and assist with knocking one or two of the smaller day jobs off the list, it would be much appreciated. You don't have to be skilled at anything in particular as there are jobs to suit all ages and sizes.

If you can give us some of your time over the weekend at the end of the week (the Committee weekend 1st/2nd June) that would be equally valuable as we are always under-staffed at that time. Please call Chris Grimmett on the Club phone number 01639 730613, e-mail estate@swcc.org.uk or just turn up. You can even arrive early as we will be setting up and getting under way from this Wednesday (22nd) onwards.

Over the Committee weekend please note:-

No.8 bedroom will be out of action
No.8 stairs will be for use only by those working upstairs in the bathroom
All other access to upstairs Nos. 9 & 10 will be by the No.10 stairs
Gents washing and toilets will be limited to the Nos. 3/4 outside facilities only.
