SWCC
at Hidden Earth - by Antonia Freem
To quote Lizzie:
" . . a weekend of catching up, interesting lectures, drinking
and mischief"
The SWCC stand
was a great success was awarded the prize for Best Club Stand (for
the 2nd time in 3 years)! The judges noted the range of media represented
- photographic prints, books, surveys, video and digital photo projection.
We won the recent
RRCPC 5 sheet Easegill survey, complete with guide booklets for
our library and bed-nights from TSG at their Castleton hut. Many
thanks to all involved - in preparation, providing superb photos
(Jem, Tony, Nicky, Pete H, Claire, Piers) and surveys and for support
on the weekend. A special mention to Bill B, Harvey L, Martin H,
Duncan H (after an exhausting 10hrs in Daren Cilau), Pete H and
Arwen who rotated with me and Andy in manning the stand. £248.50
was raised in sales.
The opening
AV was a video
produced by Andy and myself, which featured caving in Wales
and SWCC, and seemed to fit the bill. It particularly sparked interest
in those wanting to encourage new people into caving so over half
a dozen were able to download a copy during the weekend for use
to inspire future cavers. This video and Keith Edwards' 'Shakespeare's
Cave' got merit awards in the AV salon; trumped by Gavin Newman
- so stiff competition!
On Saturday
morning Martin H presented 'Eight years in search of the Rio Viscoso'
in lecture room 2. The rest of us attended lectures as audience
when we could or tried diving, plastic caving, general milling around
and networking. By 10.30 that night, after a beer, I was asleep
but stronger souls went on to party 'till dawn.
In the final
awards Pete Hobson's dad won the Art salon and there were awards
in the Photo Salon for Nicky Bailey and Andy Harp.
So all in all
I think SWCC made an impact!
(and well done
to Antonia for organising everything - Ed)
