Auction of Steve Tomalin's outdoor gear July 4th- from Paul Taylor, Gloucester Cave Rescue

The vast majority of you who receive this message will have known or knew of Steve Tomalin to one degree or another. Some as very close caving friends and others who may have seen him at caving camps or caving and rescue related meetings and shared a beer and a chat with him. He was here there and everywhere during the year.

Prior to his death in July 2014 Steve left instructions that all of his equipment (Caving, Climbing, Walking, Mountain Biking, Kayaking etc ) were to be passed to the Gloucestershire Cave Rescue Group (GCRG) to be auctioned to raise funds for the group.
Steve was a member of GCRG for many years and took a very active role in the running of the group over a very long period of time.

As you can imagine from somebody who was involved in so many activities there are a great many items to be sorted out. With the vast majority of the work completed we can announce the Auction date:

Saturday July 4th 2015 at the GCRG Depot at Cinderford in the Forest of Dean.

The services of a professional Auctioneer have been secured for the event.

However, it is not just going to be an auction and combined with the event it is planned that a series of other events are to take place on that day to celebrate all of the things that Steve Enjoyed undertaking - A caving trip, a Mountain Bike Ride, Kayaking down the River Wye, Walking and Geocaching, a Climbing Session, SRT Training.

These are planned to last a few hours and for each party to be armed with a camera and record the event and then return to the GCRG depot where all of the photographs will be put together into a presentation to be shown at the depot that day.

Following the Auction a BBQ is planned and of course some beer to be consumed. Another two of Steve's passions. At the present time it looks very much like the meeting time would be 1000 hrs at the GCRG Depot with the Auction planned for a start at 1500hrs.

A catalogue of all of the items is being prepared and this will be circulated prior to the auction. Provision will be made for those who are not able to attend to be able to submit bids by email.

I appreciate that July seems a long way off but please put the date in your diary, start saving some money up and if you would be interested in taking part in one of the activities on the day please let me know so we can start planning who is going to be taking part.

Nearer the date we will be contacting people again so we can get an idea of numbers for the BBQ.

At GCRG we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come and take part in what is going to be a celebration of Steve's life within the caving world.

True Grit on Penwyllt Hill rated PG

Your correspondant has learnt that Ian Alderman, Simon Goddard and a huge number of other folk from the Penwyllt caving community (Wealden and Swindon along with those at SWCC) were out salting / gritting the road up the hill on a recent Sunday morning. By lunchtime the road was clear enough for ordinary cars.

No ordinary feat. No ordinary cavers.
