AGM and Committee Elections (and a Party) - by PCW

Sat 2nd of May AGM - lots of important things to discuss, and vote on. Please come along, air your views and help shape your Club's future - Miner's Welfare Hall, Abercrave 9.00am.

All Committee posts are up for grabs, and it is important that new faces and new ideas come on board to shake things up and properly represent our membership today. The current Committee and Roles are here.

A number of us are not standing again in our current roles:
Antonia Freem (Ordinary Member)
Andy Freem (Training)
Krysia Groves (Journal Editor)

Piers Hallihan (Equipment)
Sue Goodhead (Hon Secretary)*
Peter Collings-Wells (Communications/Website)
* Committee are considering adding the role of Minutes Secretary, to ease the load on HonSec, so please step up if you would like to take this on.

You will get full support and mentoring from any outgoing Committee member. All roles are important, often unseen, but vital to the life of the Club we all love. If you are interested in taking on a role, but not sure quite what it entails, feel free to email me in confidence.

Party Party! - by Vince Allkins

When? Saturday 2nd May 2015 after the AGM in the evening till late!

Where? At our HQ.

This year will see a change from the ceilidh, we are going for a traditional party.

The SWCC Marquee will be erected in the car park in front of the main building.
Volunteers please to erect the marquee on Thursday 30th April.

Kim Allkins will be providing food. This will be predominantly a cold buffet with hot jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings, chicken drumsticks or thighs, cold meats and plenty of salads and veggie choices. Plus cakes for desert.
Cost: around the £5-£6 mark, please pre book.

The majority of the kitchen will be taken up to prepare for this sometime after breakfast. Please clear the worktops. Your patience and assistance will be greatly be appreciated.
We would like volunteers to help cook please.

Pat Hall will be setting up his superb music rig, and we would like you to bring along your choice of music and have a session of your preferences as either a short play list on an ipod, mp3 player or cd. We particularly hope the younger element of the club will contribute.
There will be no dominant force of music type. A variety to suite all tastes is encouraged.
Obviously anything that goes down like a lead balloon will be short lived!!
Please let me know if you want a session! Or do this via the club facebook page where Pat hall can help you with this.

A selection of real ale will also be available at £2.00 per pint.

The main concern is that we all get together, contribute, enjoy and have great fun!!
Let's give this a go and see how things pan out.

Please contact us if you want food on

Best Wishes ~ Vince & Kim.

New videos from Andy and Antonia - by PCW
To Smith's Armoury in OFD 3 & The Discovery of OFD 2

So, our very own Dynamic Duo (with their faithful band of assistants) have absolutely outshone themselves with two new videos.

The first one is of the Classic (and tough) trip from OFD 2 to Smith's Armoury in OFD 3 over the notorious traverses. It includes stills from the original discovery trip and commentary on Warden's Downfall, by the man himself!

The second relates to the original discovery of OFD 2 and the opening of Top entrance in the years leading up to 1967. Its an amazing story, largely narrated by Paddy O'Reilly, one of the original team of explorers. The system was all initially discovered from below, first via OFD1 and then Cwm Dwr.

In the early months, the explorers camped underground to save time and energy, as they pushed higher and higher, up Maypole Inlet, past Trident and Judge, Gnome Passage..... The buzz of exploration must have been amazing.

Paddy came over to visit at New Year and went underground to visit some of the seminal discoveries from that time. Of course A&A were there and here is the result.

Bob has sent this link from New Scientist, which will be of interest to all those SWCC who tend to visit this area's wonderful karst. Also here Cueva de El Mirón
