Fracking in FoD
Dear All, I expect many of you will of heard that Exploration is planned within the Forest of Dean for Fracking. My limited knowledge of this messy and potentially dangerous industry indicates that for each exploration site millions of gallons of water would be pumped into the ground; thousands of gallons of chemicals, including toxic and carcinogenic ones would be used and explosives would be discharged deep underground causing vibrations over big distances (impacts likely within a 10km zone) and potentially triggering tremors and earthquake. (See link for a description of the process, there is a lot on the Internet about this process and it's dangers.)
FOD Sites are listed on the Government document Appendix 33917 (This is a 74MB document so impossible to attach the whole document.) There are blocks in Grids SO50: SO51; SO60 (2 No.); SO61. pp 102-106 refer. I have managed to abstract these pages from the main document and attach a copy. These and their zones of influence cover, between them, the whole FOD. There are also exploration sites which could impact on Mendip Caves, see here.
It is difficult to see how caving could be permitted if such explorations go ahead and the stability of (parts of) underground mines and caves must be questionable? I am also concerned as to the effects on our industrial and natural heritage; on cave wildlife, especially hibernating bats and on our aquifers, underground water courses and pollution. I gather that a very tight timetable has been set. There is a consultation, but this is basically only asking "do you agree there should be 1km buffer zones around European protected sites". The link to the consultation is here.
REPRESENTATIONS MUST BE MADE BY THE 2nd OF SEPTEMBER

OFD Geology / Milwr Tunnel
We have now produced a full Geology of OFD 2 program 30 minutes long, presented by Dr. Keith Ball, it is detailed and very informative. There will be a copy in the Club library, it will not be put on YouTube due to its length, though YouTube has 4 shorter ‘episodes’ that can be viewed. We can provide members with a DVD if they contact us.
We have also produced a film on the Milwr Sea level tunnel that cannot be uploaded onto YouTube due to requests from Grosvenor Caving Club to keep the content within caving community. Any members who would like a copy can contact us.
Best wishes, Andy & Antonia |
Tony's Photos
Tony Baker has been busy again with his camera and has submitted some of his caving shots to the Vaude Visions photo contest, if you would like to view his entries, and perhaps vote before the end of August closing date, they can be found here.
